Sit down if
You want a stylish, story-driven game about skill and secrets.
Walk away if
You want a replayable strategy game.
♠The table
You play a mute young servant drawn into the world of a charming swindler, the Comte de Saint-Germain. Together you travel France, learning tricks and uncovering a conspiracy. It is a story game with a strong historical flavour.
♥How a hand plays
Each new trick is a little performance: shuffling, marking, signalling, using specific controller or mouse movements under time pressure, while a suspicion meter rises. Learning a new technique is like learning a dance.
♣Where luck comes in
Almost none: the entire game is about controlling the outcome with skill. It is the clearest example on our table of a card theme with no gambling at its heart.
The luck meter is our estimate of how much a typical run depends on chance. It is not part of the score. How we estimate it.
♦Look & sound
Gorgeous painterly art in the style of the period and a lively baroque-inspired soundtrack. One of the most stylish games here.
♠Value & PC
Verified on Steam Deck. Controller recommended. Mostly linear with little replay.

The house verdict
Verdict
Card Shark is a stylish, original adventure with tricks instead of fights. It is less replayable than the rest of our table, but nothing else looks or plays like it.
