Inscryption

A dark, inventive card battler mixed with escape-room puzzles and a story that keeps changing the rules. Go in knowing as little as possible.

Excellent. An easy pick for anyone who likes the genre.

Sit down if

You want a card game that is also a mystery and a little bit of a horror story.

Walk away if

You want a pure deckbuilder with consistent rules.

♠The table

You wake up in a dark cabin across the table from a mysterious figure who wants to play a card game. Losing has consequences. Between hands you can get up and explore the cabin, which hides puzzles and secrets. That is all you should know.

♥How a hand plays

You play creature cards by sacrificing other creatures, using a scale that tips toward you or your opponent. Cards gain sigils that change how they fight. The card game is solid on its own, but the real surprises come from how the game itself changes.

♣Where luck comes in

Card draws and rewards are random, but the game gives you many ways to bend the rules. The bigger gamble is the story, which keeps pulling the table out from under you.

The luck meter is our estimate of how much a typical run depends on chance. It is not part of the score. How we estimate it.

♦Look & sound

Atmospheric, creepy and full of texture: candlelight, wooden cards, unsettling voices. One of the most distinctive styles on Steam. Mild horror, some jump moments.

♠Value & PC

Playable on Steam Deck with minor issues. A free roguelike mode (Kaycee's Mod) adds lots of replay after the story.

Winning hand

  • Constant surprises
  • Exceptional atmosphere
  • Clever sacrifice mechanic
  • Free roguelike mode adds replay

Bad beats

  • Later sections are uneven
  • Not for those who dislike horror

Inscryption is unlike anything else at our table: a card game, a puzzle box and a horror story that keeps reinventing itself. Unforgettable.
